What is UX audit work, and what is a UX audit or UI UX audit for: an audit UX UI review, in plain terms

Updated

A UX audit is an expert review of how a site behaves for the person using it: whether they can find the price, complete the form on a phone, understand what the business does in the first seconds, and get to the enquiry without a wrong turn. A UI UX audit adds the interface itself: the layout, the buttons, the contrast, the consistency. It is done by walking the site the way a customer would, against a published set of usability principles, and writing down every place the site makes the customer work. This page answers what is a UX audit, what it covers, what you receive, and when it is worth buying rather than doing the plain version yourself.

What the auditor actually does

They take the tasks a visitor comes to do, such as find the price, book, enquire, buy, and walk each one on a phone and a desktop as a first-time visitor, noting every hesitation, dead end, unclear label and form field that fights back. They compare what they see against usability heuristics, a short list of principles such as visibility of status, match with the real world, error prevention and recognition over recall, that has been the standard for expert review for decades. And they look at the interface layer: touch targets, contrast, consistency, what the buttons say. The output is a list of findings, each tied to a task and a principle.

What you receive, and what it is not

A prioritised list of findings with a screenshot, the principle it breaks, the task it interrupts, and a recommended fix, usually with a rough effort. Sometimes a walkthrough video. What it is not: a redesign, which is the fix rather than the finding; usability testing, which watches real users rather than an expert; an accessibility audit, which checks conformance to a technical standard and is a different discipline. A UX audit that comes back as a mood board has skipped the work.

When to buy one, and the plain version you can do yourself

Buy an expert audit when the site gets enough visitors that a small improvement in the enquiry rate is worth the fee, or before a redesign so the redesign has a brief. Do the plain version yourself first regardless: hand a phone to someone who has never seen the site, ask them to find the price and book, and watch without helping. Most of what an expert would find in the first hour shows up in that five minutes, and the record of it belongs in the project file as the reason for the changes that follow.

Questions people ask about what is a ux audit

What is the difference between a UX audit and a UI audit?

UX is whether the visitor can do what they came for; UI is whether the interface itself is clear, consistent and usable. Most audits sold as UI UX audits cover both, with the UX findings being the ones that move enquiries.

How long does a UX audit take?

For a small site, a day or two of an expert's time plus the write-up. The plain self-check takes five minutes and a phone.

Is a UX audit the same as an accessibility audit?

No. An accessibility audit checks a site against a technical standard for people using assistive technology. A UX audit checks whether any visitor can get their task done. They overlap and they are different disciplines.
